Life On Film: Recent Movies That Reflect The Lives Of Older Adults
October 28, 2026

It’s been said by actor, writer, and director Tom Hanks that “There is a direct correlation between cinema and society, with events in film often paralleling cultural developments in real time.” That’s clearly the case with a crop of recent movies that depict the current challenges of being an older adult but also reflect the opportunities that await those who want to stay engaged and stimulated in their later years. So let’s take a look at some recent films that may be under the radar but by no means are irrelevant.
First, there is the brand-new movie Queen at Sea, which will be released in the US tomorrow, Oct. 30th, and which stars such notable actors as Juliette Binoche and Tom Courtenay (the movie was previously released in the UK). Lauded by critics as “unbearable in its tragic candour and essential in its moral questioning,” the story centers on the relationship of a daughter, her mother with dementia, and her stepfather. Trying to decide who can make decisions and what informs the best interests of the mother with dementia, it is an intimate and searing examination of life lived with decline, impaired decision-making, and the messy relationships that often infuse caregiving. Also dealing with impaired decision-making is the movie Familiar Touch, which premiered in the US in 2025 and was lauded with film festival awards for both the film and the acting in the title role by Kathleen Chalfant. Billed as a “coming-of-old-age” film, the story centers on an older woman transitioning to assisted living and dealing with shifting memories and adjustments to a new life and unfamiliar caregivers. You can watch the trailer here, and the film is now available on demand, so you can access it here. And you can read a 5-star review of the film here.
Switching to a documentary about a real retirement home, consider the movie Viva Verdi, about a retirement home in Milan, started by the composer Verdi, which houses aging opera singers and musicians, along with the young musicians that they mentor. Living their lives of passion, beauty, and purpose, the residents of this home will surely delight and entertain you. And speaking of living with purpose and passion, you might also want to consider watching the recent fictional movie “Lonely,” the story of a lonely, 80-year-old woman who tries one more attempt at connecting with others, including a last chance for love.
