As we confront the economic fallout that seems to be afflicting our country, there are many ways to discern how consumers will respond to rising prices. One concept, coined by cosmetics heir Leonard Lauder in 2001, is known as the “lipstick index.” According to this concept, as prices rise and luxury goods become out of reach for consumers, many will instead indulge in “small” luxuries, such as a new lipstick. Therefore, if we see lipstick purchases rising, we can surmise that consumers may be pulling back from more expensive items. Alternatively, there is the “men’s underwear index,” which reflects the fact that when times are tough, men are more likely to hold off buying new underwear and will instead make do with what they have.  

While we are not yet formally in a recession, if you find yourself mulling over a new lipstick, chances are we are heading in that direction.
