Clothes Closet: Fashion Suggestions And Advice This Season
May 15, 2024
Despite the strange spring weather many of us are experiencing, we are heading toward the warmer months of summer, which for many means it’s time to switch out those winter clothes and reassess your warm weather wardrobe. While few of us do a full wardrobe exchange, given that so many items in our closets are not confined to a particular season, it’s still useful (and fun) to see what’s recommended for this time of year!
In a recent post in The Telegraph by Head of Fashion Lisa Armstrong, recommendations focus on on-trend but practical choices for older women. Armstrong suggests maybe a few items that you love during the colder weather months but in lighter fabrics, such as linen or cotton. She also suggests basics that include T-shirts and jeans, but maybe a slightly more sophisticated version of a T-shirt, if your body shape no longer supports a tight-fitting T or slim jeans. Again, with emphasis on practical basics, she then suggests a strong accessory, like a chunky necklace, to give your look a little pizzazz. Another Telegraph fashion post suggests one bold piece (perhaps in an attention-getting fabric like leopard or metallic) to spice up an otherwise more traditional and neutral look. And speaking of attention-grabbing accessories, the website Pure Wow recently profiled the return of the matching handbag and shoes, a look they attribute to Baby Boomer women but now adopted by all ages in bright colors that pop out against a neutral outfit. One bright color that really pops in the warm weather? A sunny yellow, which Alyson Walsh, from That’s Not My Age, recommends this season as a contrast to more neutral colors.
Other suggestions to punch up an otherwise quiet look include the return of the “bow” which has been championed for decades by 81-year-old designer Betsy Johnson. Or suppose you want to glamorize a little black dress (always a fashionable choice, especially for some of those summer evening soirees). In that case, the Wall Street Journal suggests you select a black dress with an interesting fabric, texture, or proportion. And speaking of dresses, Town and Country recently recommended the 20 most flattering dresses for mature women, regardless of the season (though many recommendations will be ideal for warmer weather). The brands they select run the gamut from a $35 Amazon dress to a $1600 gown from Net-A-Porter. If you want to stick to the most popular brands among Baby Boomers, take a look at this recent list from 24/7 Wall Street, which lists in order the 21 most popular brands among us older adults, including such predictable favorites as LL Bean, Levis, and even J Crew (but somehow, Chanel is also on the list!).
And suppose you just want to window shop or see what’s on the market. In that case, you may want to head over to QVC, which recently began promoting its new venture, The Age of Possibility, a new focus on women over 50, including style recommendations and features with iconic women of 50+.
